Holiday skincare in asia
Stay Radiant on your holidays.
Nestled on a sunbed on the serene Sai Daeng beach at the most southern tip of Ko Tao, and applying SPF50 to my face and neck, I thought it good timing to write a blog about looking after your skin in Asia.
Having lived in Asia and travelled throughout it extensively, I have experienced having to look after my skin in different ways over the years to work with the hot, sticky climate and have learnt what worked and what didn’t.
Back in the day I would bake in the sun for hours wearing low factor sun oils and didn’t know about ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, niacinamide or collagen.
I am still paying for that with signs of sun damage but now I know how to prepare and preserve my skin better. . .
Traveling in Asia is an exciting experience, but the region’s diverse climates—from humid tropics to dry winters—can challenge your skin. Whether you’re exploring Thailand’s beaches, Japan’s snowy landscapes, or bustling cities like Singapore, here’s how to keep your skin glowing throughout your trip.
1. Hydration is Key
Asian climates can be dehydrating, whether due to heat, humidity, or cold air. Carry a hydrating mist and drink plenty of water to maintain skin elasticity. Look for skincare products with hyaluronic acid or aloe vera for extra moisture.
2. Sunscreen is Non-Negotiable
The sun in Asia can be intense, even on cloudy days. Use a lightweight, broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 50+) to protect against UV damage. Many Asian sunscreens offer added skincare benefits like hydration and brightening.
3. Lightweight Products for Humid Climates
In tropical regions like Bali or the Philippines, heavy creams can feel sticky. Opt for gel-based moisturisers, water-based serums, and oil-free sunscreen to keep your skin fresh.
4. Barrier Protection in Cold Weather
If you’re heading to South Korea or Japan in winter, protect your skin from harsh winds with a nourishing moisturiser and a barrier-repairing night cream. Layering skincare with hydrating toners and essences is a common K-beauty trick.
5. Soothe and Restore After Travel
Long flights and pollution in major Asian cities like Bangkok or Shanghai can stress your skin. Use sheet masks infused with green tea, centella asiatica, or snail mucin to calm and rejuvenate your complexion.
6. Local Skincare Finds
Asia is home to incredible beauty innovations. Consider picking up products infused with traditional ingredients like rice water (brightening), ginseng (anti-aging), or tea tree (anti-acne).
No matter where your holiday takes you, adjusting your skincare routine to match the local climate will keep your skin healthy and radiant.
Safe travels and happy skincare!
